Back in 1986, I was a strapping young guy in the military, freshly emancipated minor. It was an interesting time with the cold war at an all time high with Reagan was in full swing and the military, my employer, was getting pay raises left and right. It paid to be republican.
I believed in working hard and working smart and you can get into positions to make money, and I have. Put myself through college, own a home, have a family, etc.
Growing up in Philadelphia, I've seen quite a bit of welfare queens. I know people like to say it's a myth but I knew some of them personally. Hell, I remember seeing people getting their checks with their Mercedes parked outside. This was probably my primary reason to be republican. I never liked the idea of giving a man a fish but rather teach him to fish and send him on his way.
Today, it's hard to make sense of the republican party. They appear to be highly religious evangelicals mixed with radical right wing extremists. They don't seem to give two craps about this country or the people in it.
Rights are being eroded, ignorance is promoted, and from where I sit, a lot of racism because a black man is in office.
I always considered myself in the middle slightly leaning right and never voted party line. Either you could do the job or you could not, I gave a fig what party you belonged to.
Today, these new republicans have shown their true colors and things have shifted so far right, that you need to lean left just to hit center.
It's this reason that I am registering independent and you will find one less sane republican.
